ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS

Use:

Anti wrinkle injections are the use of botulinum toxin products which help to relax muscles of the face. It works by temporarily paralysing the muscle which in turn will reduce the appearance of fine lines (sometimes dermal fillers are also required – however this will be determined by your practitioner during the consultation process). Various areas can be treated on the face including forehead lines and smile lines.

Key Elements/Benefits:
  • No down time
  • Quick treatment times
  • Minimal discomfort
Who can have anti-wrinkle injections?

A full medical history will be taken prior to injecting to determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate. Most people can receive anti-wrinkle injections however the following conditions are contraindicated:

  • Pregnancy/breast feeding
  • Hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin
  • Presence of infection at proposed injection site
  • Some neurological diseases (ie: epilepsy)
Is there downtime?

Anti-wrinkle injections are often performed very quickly with no downtime, however there is always a risk of bruising (if this occurs we offer complimentary LED sessions to speed up the healing). Some patients will only have pin point bruising which is easy to cover with concealer, whilst others can bruise more severely (particularly around the eyes). We recommend avoiding fish oils and blood thinners prior to injecting to reduce this risk.

How many treatments/how many units are required?

One treatment is all that’s required for the injections, however keeping this in mind some people require more units at their 2 week follow up due to stronger facial muscles. We often use what’s called a standard dose for each area and because everyone is so different this can vary from patient to patient.

How long will it last?

This will vary mainly on the patients metabolism, we find people who are very active wont usually get as long out of their injections compared to someone who is more sedentary. Between 2 – 4 weeks is when the toxin is at its peak effect, at 8 weeks people will begin to see some movement form and by 12 weeks 60 – 80% of movement will be back. Most people get treated every 12 – 16 weeks depending on the look they are going for.

Prior to treatment:

We recommend avoiding any supplements that thin the blood to avoid bruising. If you are taking prescription medications that thin the blood you must seek doctors advice before ceasing. If you are wearing make up to the appointment this will be cleansed off for infections purposes.

During the treatment:

Your skin will be cleansed with chlorhexidine or an alcohol wipe (this helps to remove make up and reduce infection). The injections are then performed using very small needles and pressure is applied with gauze afterwards to reduce bruising. The treatment is relatively pain free – some people require numbing cream due to lower pain thresholds, this will be applied by the doctor/nurse.

After the treatment:

Some patients will have pin point bruises, however we find 90% will not bruise at all. About 5% of patients will experience headaches post treatment, this can last up to 1 week post injections. It takes up to 2 weeks to see the full effect of the injections at which a review appointment should be made to ensure everything is working optimally

Things to avoid post treatment:
  • Avoid make up for 6 hours (if possible)
  • Avoid exercise for the rest of the day (next morning is fine)
  • No massages or facials for 2 weeks
  • No lying down for 4 hours
  • Avoid active products (ie vitamin A or AHA/BHA’s) for 24 hours
Potential risks and side effects:

With anti wrinkle injections there will always come risks and side effects. The most common side effects including bruising, tenderness and redness. Some rarer side effects include asymmetry, infection, brow drop and eyelid ptosis – if any of these occur you should come back to the clinic for a review.
