CHEMICAL PEELS

What are peels?

Chemical Peels are solutions that are made up of chemicals (mainly AHA and BHA’s). In general peels stimulate cellular regeneration, improving the texture and tone of the skin, leaving the skin looking refreshed and vibrant. Some peels can cause the outer most layer of skin to slough off – leaving the skin looking refreshed, resurfaced and vibrant. We use a variety and strength of peels to treat different conditions.

Key Elements/Benefits:
  • Minimal downtime
  • Quick and easy
  • FDA AND TGA approved for photodamaged skin
  • Specific plan tailored to you
Who can or can’t have peels?

Almost any skin type can have chemical peels. For darker skin types we use more superficial treatments as deeper peels can cause post inflammatory pigmentation (darkening of the skin). When we see patients with certain skin concerns such as rosacea and active acne we often recommend other treatments such as Laser Genesis. This is something your Practitioner will decide for you.

Some contraindications include:

  • Infection or open wounds on the area being treated
  • Presence of cold sores
  • Pregnancy and breast feeding
  • Strong history of retinoid use (vitamin A – Accutane)
  • Patients who have had injectables up to 1 month prior
Downtime?

Some peels have no down time and others you may experience peeling for up to 1 week post treatment. Each skin concern requires different peels and therefore different amounts of downtime will be associated with this. Our strongest TCA peel (often used to remove solar keratosis) can have peeling up to 7 days post peel.

How many treatments are required?

Most patients will have a series of 3 – 6 peels about 4 – 6 weeks apart depending on the concern and what results they are after. Some patients will have a chemical peel every couple of months to delay the onset of ageing and improve the skins luminosity.

How long do results last?

Depending on the type of peel, the more peels you have in the initial series the longer the results will last. A good skincare regime at home will enhance the longevity. The initial ‘glow’ usually lasts a couple of weeks. TCA peels for Pigmentation or Solar Keratosis may last up to 12 months.

Some chemical peels can also be combined with Laser Genesis: please refer to our Signature page for more information.

What do chemical peels not treat?

Peels work on the superficial layers of the skin and therefore will not help with deep rhytids (lines), deep facial folds and capillaries.

Prior to treatment:

Prior to any peels we recommend avoiding the sun for a minimum of 2 weeks prior, this will reduce your risk of hyper pigmenting (excess pigment within the skin). Patients should be using prepping products at home such as gentle AHA cleansers, vitamin A and vitamin B – this ensures your skin is ready to handle the peel and will aid in the recovery process.

During treatment:

During the treatment a mini facial is performed to remove makeup and pollution on the skin. Barrier cream is then applied around the mucous membranes (mouth and nose) to prevent oversensitivity. The peel is applied using either a brush or cotton tips and depending on the peel being performed this can stay on anywhere from 3 minutes to 8 hours.

After treatment:

After the peel has been removed (exception with TCA peels) cold compress will be applied to absorb the heat your skin produces when removed. Our more superficial peels are finished with an LED session to encourage healing and recovery. The TCA peels require you to go home with the peel on, as this must stay on the skin for a minimum of 4 hours.
