DERMAL FILLERS

Use:

Dermal Fillers are often used to restore lost volume in the face, they can also be used to contour and reshape areas. Our dermal fillers which are hyaluronic acid (HA) based are injected just beneath the skin, the substance binds to water which causes a plumping effect. These can be injected anywhere on the face, the most common areas include lips, cheeks and chin.

Key Elements/Benefits:
  • A natural way to create a more youthful look
  • Minimal downtime, if any
  • FDA and TGA approved for anti aging
Who can have dermal fillers injections?

A full medical history will be taken prior to injecting to determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate. Most people can receive dermal filler injections however the following conditions are contraindicated:

  • Pregnancy/breast feeding
  • Hypersensitivity to lidocaine
  • Presence of infection at proposed injection site
  • Some autoimmune diseases should be cleared by your GP first.
Is there downtime?

The most common side effect with dermal fillers is the bruising – so therefore there can be downtime. Everyone will react differently. Some people will experience no bruising while others will bruise more severely. The bruising can last anywhere from 5 – 7 days. Tenderness is also a common side effect which can be relieved with the use of ice and cold compress.

How many treatments/how many units are required?

Each area will require different amounts of filler and depending on your age also. People who begin having fillers in their late 20’s and early 30’s will need a lot less than those in their 50’s and 60’s. Often people will have their fillers done over a few appointments, anywhere from 2 – 8mL’s will be required. This is something your practitioner will decide upon.

How long will it last?

Depending on the area being treated and the product being used – however most fillers will last from 6 – 18 months. Some areas such as the lips will metabolise the filler more quickly than an area such as the temples.

Prior to treatment:

Like anti wrinkle injections we recommend avoiding any supplements that thin the blood to avoid bruising. If you are taking prescription medications that thin the blood you must seek doctors advice before ceasing. If you are wearing make up to the appointment this will be cleansed off for infections purposes. Some areas such as the lips will require topical anaesthetic to reduce pain levels which is applied up to 15 mins prior to injecting.

During the treatment:

The area will be disinfected to reduce the risk of infection. Either a needle or cannula will be used to inject the substance, some patients find this process more comfortable than others. Certain areas on the face are more sensitive than others, therefore pain will depend on area and dose of product.

After the treatment:

After the injections have been performed each patient is placed under the LED. This helps to reduce inflammation, bruising and tenderness. Due to the lidocaine in the fillers most people don’t experience tenderness until 4 hours post injections. Some people take Panadol to reduce this. Cold compress and icing is always recommended as much as desired.

Things to avoid post fillers:

  • Avoid make up for the rest of the day
  • Avoid smoking/alcohol
  • Avoid active products (vitamin A and AHA/BHA’s)
  • Avoid facials/massage or 2 weeks
  • Avoid touching and massaging the area (unless directed by your practitioner)
Potential risks and side effects:

Like all procedures there comes risks. The most common side effects include bruising and tenderness. Rare complications include infection, vascular occlusion, nodules and potential blindness – this will all be covered in your consultation process. Each patient must consider the risks these treatments carry.
